Four O'clock
Mirabilis jalapa

A native to tropical South America, this old fashioned favorite is often referred to as “Marvels of Peru”. The leafy, shrub-like, multi-branched perennial produces flowers all summer long in shades of red, magenta, pink, yellow and white. Interestingly flowers of different colors can be found simultaneously on the same plant and individual blooms can change colors as the plant matures. The flowers have a sweet-smelling fragrance and usually open from late afternoon onwards, hence the name Four O'clock. Hummingbirds, butterflies and bees are attracted to the fragrant plant. Fast growing, essentially trouble free and thriving in most any soil are factors which make these plants ideal for beds and in a perennial border, or in frost free climates they can even be used as a hedge. Hardy to zone 7 and higher, these are treated as annuals in colder climates. Garden height is about 30-36".
