Japanese Maple 'Inaba Shidare'

This remarkable Japanese Maple variety has been cultivated in Japan since the mid-1800's and is arguably the most outstanding of the dissectum types. Owing to its cascading form, its Japanese name translates as 'leaves of the rice plant'. Growing somewhat more upright and fuller with larger leaves than other dissectums, it holds its deep purple-red color all summer and turning to a brilliant crimson-red in fall. 15+ Seeds.

Japanese Maple 'Inaba Shidare'
Acer palmatum var. dissectum 'Inaba Shidare' cv.

This remarkable Japanese Maple variety has been cultivated in Japan since the mid-1800's and is arguably the most outstanding of the dissectum types. Owing to its cascading form, its Japanese name translates as 'leaves of the rice plant'. Growing somewhat more upright and fuller with larger leaves than other dissectums, it holds its deep purple-red color all summer and turning to a brilliant crimson-red in fall. This variety is a very sturdy, vigorous grower with a mature height and width up to 7-10', although most will max out at 4-6' high. It responds well to pruning and is also suitable for container growing or bonsai culture. Hardy in Zones 5-9.

Note that tree seeds do not reproduce exact replicas of the cultivar from which they developed. Usually strong resemblance is found among the seedlings and often seedlings from the same tree will differ from one another! This uniqueness and variation in leaf shape, colour and habit in tree seedlings is part of the enjoyment of growing these beautiful specimens from scratch.
