Pitcher Plant 'Hooded'

Sarracenia minor

Because of its unusual similarity to a hooded villain, this odd Sarracenia variety has earned the name "hooded pitcher plant". The Latin name indicates that most specimens of this plant are small in size, growing to only a foot high or less at maturity. It is the most southern species of Sarracenia and unlike most other varieties, it does not require a constant boggy type condition to grow and hence lends itself to grow in more typical garden conditions. 25+ Seeds.

Hooded Pitcher Plant
Sarracenia minor

Because of its unusual similarity to a hooded villain, this odd Sarracenia variety has earned the name "hooded pitcher plant". The Latin name indicates that most specimens of this plant are small in size, growing to only a foot high or less at maturity. It is the most southern species of Sarracenia and unlike most other varieties, it does not require a constant boggy type condition to grow and hence lends itself to grow in more typical garden conditions. The flowers of the Hooded Pitcher Plant are quite unusual, sort of a yellow-green cross which appear in late winter to early spring and hang downwards from the top of the stock. Another unique feature is the large number of white dots found on the upper portion of the pitcher. Like all Sarracenia, it is a carnivorous species that traps insects as a source of additional nutrients. To do this, the plant uses its upright folded leaves or "pitchers" which are half full of water, with sticky juice near the top. The juice attracts insects, which crawl into the “pitcher” and become trapped and are then "consumed" by the plant. A rare variety, it is hardy from zones 7-9 and will make a unique addition to your garden or home. Unusual and fun to grow, this beautiful specimen is actually not that hard from seed if proper cultural practices are followed.
