Pride of Barbados - Peacock Flower

The species name pulcherrima literally means "very pretty" and this plant definitely lives up to the name. Caesalpinia pulcherrima

The species name pulcherrima literally means "very pretty" and this plant definitely lives up to the name. Pride of Barbados is a member of the Fabaceae or pea family and is sometimes referred to by other names including Peacock Flower, Paradise Bird, Barbados Flowerfence, Dwarf Flamboyan and Dwarf Poinciana. The blooms of Pride of Barbados are incredible - terminal flower clusters are a orange-red with a tinge of gold on the edges. Each flower is composed of five showy petals with very prominent six inch long red stamens. This makes the Pride of Barbados one of the most attractive plants on earth!

Caesalpinia pulcherrima may grow to a height of 6 to 10 feet but can easily be pruned to any desired size and shape. A very desirable and easy to grow houseplant or as a garden specimen plant. The striking orange red flowers are a real attention grabber. Winter hardy in zones 9 - 11 and can be treated as a perennial in zone 8. A fast grower, Pride of Barbados can also be grown as a tender perennial in colder climates and brought indoors during the winter months.
