Plumeria, also known as Frangipani, or as the Hawaiian lei flower is a tropical flowering tree ranging from the Americas to India and is especially abundant in the Hawaiian and Caribbean Islands. Plumeria are valued as landscape plants, ornamentals, and for their flowers. The flowers come in seemingly endless variety of color, size and fragrance. Plumeria may be grown in the ground or in pots. It can be maintained as a shrub or small tree grown in a container on the patio or in the garden or grow as an exotic houseplant. They also may be stored bare root for the winter, which makes them an ideal tropical plant that may be grown and brought to flower almost anywhere - even in northern climates! Surprisingly for an exotic plant, Plumeria are easy to germinate and grow from seed, requiring very little special care. Growing seedlings will not guarantee color true to the parent plant but does offer the excitement of developing new varieties.
