Detailed Description...

African Tulip Tree
Spathodea companulata

Indigenous to tropical Africa, this is one of the world's most spectacular flowering trees. The African Tulip Tree is also sometimes called Fire Tree, Flame of the Forest or Fountain Tree. This red variety blooms nearly year round in softball sized, very showy crimson red clusters that resemble tulips facing upwards on the branch. It is also very fast growing. In it's homeland, it is a massive tree to 60 feet but seldom attains that size grown elsewhere. Young trees may put on 6' in height and 2" in diameter per year and often begin blooming when they are only three years old. An evergreen tree, they make outstanding landscape and shade specimens in zone 10-11. Elsewhere, they can be grown as exotic container specimens. As a houseplant, this tree is fast growing and has beautiful spreading branches and fuzz green leaves. Indoors or out, the African Tulip Tree is a fine exotic specimen of unsurpassed beauty. Often germinating in less than 2 weeks, these are quite easy to grow from seed.
