Japanese Maples are among the most popular cultivated trees in the temperate world. They are also one of the most expensive trees you can buy but you easily can grow your own from seed at the fraction of the cost. They are great for lawn specimen trees, growing in large containers and they make ideal Bonsai specimens. This collection is for one packet each of four (4) varieties:

Green Leaf Japanese Maple
Red Japanese Maple
Japanese Maple 'Bloodgood'
Japanese Maple 'Sumi nagashi'

Note that tree seeds do not reproduce exact replicas of the cultivar from which they developed. Usually strong resemblance is found among the seedlings and often seedlings from the same tree will differ from one another. This uniqueness and variation in leaf shape, color and habit in tree seedlings is part of the enjoyment of growing these beautiful specimens from scratch.

Green Leaf Japanese Maple
Acer palmatum
The green leafed variety is widely used as a landscape specimen in Japanese gardens. Grows 20 to 30 feet and has beautiful red-orange autumn foliage. This version is particularly well suited to bonsai, with its small leaves. The full spectrum of these bonsai specimens come to life in the fall as the trees undergo spectacular transformations as it foliage turns to a brilliant red.

Red Japanese Maple
Acer palmatum 'atropurpureum'
The classic variety has red-purple leaves which turn to a brilliant red in autumn. This variety can reach heights of approximately 15-20 feet in the garden. Like the Green Leaf Japanese Maple, this variety has a compact, rounded form that make it a superb candidate for bonsai. Alternatively, grow them in your landscape or in containers as a beautiful focal point specimen.

Japanese Maple 'Bloodgood'

This variety can reach maximum heights of 15-20 feet in the garden and has a rich dark "blood red" leaf color that holds its color throughout the summer. It is the most popular of all the Japanese Maples and it is also said to be the hardiest variety.

Japanese Maple 'Sumi nagashi'
Acer palmatum 'Suminagashi' cv
Somewhat smaller than other varieties offered in this collection, Sumi nagashi as a broad upright growth habit with bright red new leaves in the spring, turning bronze-green in summer, finally crimson in autumn. This is a large leaf cultivar with seven lobes, growing to a maximum height of about 6-10 feet.
