Japanese Black Pine

One of the most popular specimens for Bonsai growing, the Japanese Black Pine is a rather distinctive and picturesque tree because of its irregular shape. They are also very popular as landscape specimens, most likely due to their low maintenance and tolerance to extreme conditions. They make an excellent evergreen for coastal regions because if its tolerance of high winds and salt spray. They are also very tolerant of urban conditions. Native to northeastern China, Korea and Japan, they are quite hardy and can easily be grown in zones 5-8. Generally these grow to about 20-30' high in cultivation but can grow to about 100' high in its natural habitat. They are surprisingly easy to grow from seed.
