Chinese Elm is an exceptionally handsome and fast-growing shade tree. A mature, well-thinned Chinese Elm is a tree of great beauty. One of its most attractive features is the bark, which is often patched in varying colors. In fall, its dark-green foliage changes to a eye-catching yellow to reddish purple. It is a tough tree, capable of growing just about anywhere, even on adverse sites. It tolerates pests, neglect and is very resistant to diseases, including Dutch Elm disease. Its toughness and weeping form make Chinese Elm quite popular in bonsai horticulture as well. Fast growing and hardy from zones 4-9, this handsome specimen tree can grow up to 50 feet high.
