Detailed Description...

American Sycamore
Platanus occidentalis

The American sycamore is a very fast growing deciduous tree that can reach 80' in height in 20 years or less and ultimately growing to more than 100 feet in height with a trunk diameter greater than 10 feet. Even young sycamore seedlings will grow 3-4 feet in height the first year from seed. Along with its massive size, one of the other most interesting characteristics of this tree is its bark. The bark on young trees is dark reddish-brown but on older trees, the bark separates and peels off in large thin flakes, revealing the lighter colored inner bark in attractive, irregular patches. Adding to its ornamental appeal, this tree has leaves that look somewhat like maple leaves. Hardy through zones 4 to 9, these are easy to grow from seed and make for superb lawn and specimen trees.
