Named for Helen of Troy, Helenium is an important late flowering butterfly plant which puts on quite a show from August through frost, producing numerous wonderful, shaggy, daisy-like flowers in a range of glorious warm shades of red, yellow and rust. The unique daisy-like flowers of this plant have distinctive tooth-like indentations at the ends of their petals, hence the common name Dogtooth daisy. These plants are very valuable for delivering bold color late in the season. The flowers are borne on long stems and make excellent cut flowers. Growing to a height of 3-4 feet, this hardy perennial is easy from seed and easy to grow in full sun and ordinary garden soil. Hardy through zones 2 - 9.
